Wired Broadcast is an international leader in agile connectivity for mission-critical applications and a trusted provider of end-to-end broadcast and live event facilities and services.

Our earliest successes include the Grammy Awards, the Centennial Olympic Games, Live 8, and the MTV Europe Music Awards. At times we’ve provided unilateral broadcast facilities for as many as 50 radio stations. Working with hundreds of individual radio stations plus national networks like BBC, Premiere Networks, and CBC, since the early 90s we’ve managed live broadcasts in more than 20 countries in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Johnnie is a seasoned executive who has led Wired Broadcast to become a trusted resource for high-profile clients around the world.

Since founding the company more than 25 years ago, Johnnie has built a reputation as a pathfinder, helping clients remain at the forefront of the changing technology landscape. Building on Wired Broadcast’s track record with the world’s top entertainment and broadcast brands, he has led its expansion into agile connectivity for mission-critical military and security applications. Under his leadership, the company has been recognised by its technology partners for its pioneering contribution to product design and development of international distribution channels.

After studying electronic engineering at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Johnnie began his career as an engineer at BBC Radio and then at Molinare Visions, the renowned London post-production house for premiere drama, feature film, and documentary content.

A music and sound aficionado from an early age, Patrick spent the first part of his career at Unique Facilities, BBC Scotland, and BBC TV Centre.

client backgroundTBI Media is an award-winning producer of programmes and live events for TV, radio, and online brands in the UK and abroad. Working with clients like the BBC, Disney, and BT Sport, TBI develops innovative concepts and produces complex creative projects.

problemTBI developed an unusual concept for the re-launch of Virgin Radio UK that featured a live broadcast from a high-speed train. Based on Wired Broadcast’s track record of successful projects for his company, CEO Phil Critchlow contacted Wired Broadcast to enquire about project feasibility. The challenge would be getting audio from the train to the studio, and Critchlow wanted to know if high-quality connectivity over the 4-hour journey between Manchester and London would be possible using Viprinet® technology.

solutionTo determine technical feasibility, Wired Broadcast needed to assess connectivity along the proposed train route and develop a heatmap of areas in which live two-transmission would be reliable, uncertain, or impossible due to dead zones. Virgin Trains generously provided a train for the test, during which Wired Broadcast recorded performance of the Viprinet system for later playback to determine the optimal order of the programme. On the day of the event, Wired Broadcast installed two Viprinet 2610 routers connected to antennas near the front and rear of the train, employing a mix of 3G and 4G connections with SIMs from 4 carriers, for a total of 12 simultaneous mobile broadband connections. Wired Broadcast supervised the broadcast while TBI operated a full radio studio in one of the carriages.

benefitsThe train departed as scheduled, and for the main part of the journey, not a single packet of data was lost. The launch programme from the train included two Virgin Radio presenters and five live music acts. Sam Branson participated from the train, while Richard Branson called in by phone. When the train entered a long tunnel at a different time than expected, the studio filled the slot with content, making the error barely detectable. For Virgin and TBI, the live launch was a major coup. Sam Branson said, “Well done to everyone involved in what can only be described as a truly fun, out-of-the-box and unique radio launch!”

In the UK, Bauer’s radio division has a reach of more than 25 million listeners across Absolute Radio Network, KISS Network, Bauer City Network, and Magic Radio.

problemIn 2017, Bauer contacted Wired Broadcast for an outside broadcast on Magic FM’s Breakfast Show. The brief required Wired Broadcast to install an on-air studio with low-latency wireless connectivity on a train, the Orient Express, for a drive-time show highlighting the release of Sir Kenneth Branagh’s remake of Murder on the Orient Express.

solutionThanks to their earlier site visit to St. Pancras International to check connectivity and plan logistics, the Wired Broadcast team was well prepared on the day of the event. Knowing that the Orient Express would be in the station’s international terminal, they had scheduled extra time to pass through security and immigration control. They were also able to quickly install a complete on-air studio, using a Mediaport® IP bonding router to combine multiple cellular links and provision reliable, low-latency connectivity without the need for a wired connection.

benefitsThe show was engineered by Wired Broadcast, while Magic Breakfast presenters interviewed Branagh and other guests on the train. The programme was flawless from start to finish, thanks to the Wired Broadcast team. Jonathan Dean, head of technology for Bauer’s national radio brands, said that Wired Broadcast is the go-to provider when his team needs help with an outside broadcast, and he appreciates the fact that they look out for him. “They’ll see a press release about an upcoming project and contact us to see if we need help on it. I don’t even have to pick up the phone. It’s worry free.”

Whitecoat raises the creative stakes using 4G bonding to live stream branded content to YouTube

client backgroundWith offices in London, New York, and Singapore, Whitecoat is a creative agency that produces branded, live, interactive, and virtual-reality content as well as film and television for high-profile clients like Coca-Cola, PayPal, Ford, ASOS, and Barclays. Its in-house creative agency, Creative Lab, develops creative concepts, and the company provides a range of production services, from shooting to post production.

problemWhitecoat provides engaging live content for major brands, and to stream live on YouTube from virtually any location, the company needed a portable connectivity solution that could use the links available on location. In 2017, Whitecoat contacted Wired Broadcast to enquire about its IP bonding products. Before the December holidays, the company was planning a live multi-camera webcast for Channel 4 of a PayPal-sponsored event, the “PayPal Turkey Dash”, in which contestants vote online for digitally-animated turkeys running a race in a virtual stadium.

solutionWhitecoat opted to use the Viprinet® Multichannel VPN Router 2610 connected to Wired Broadcast’s Viprinet hub, bonding multiple 4G links for the PayPal event, which Whitecoat filmed at the Channel 4 studio and streamed live to YouTube. Whitecoat has also used the Viprinet solution for two live fashion events for UK retail giant Primark and a live mixology event for Beefeater Gin in which bartender contestants mixed complex cocktails while scrutinised by judges.

client backgroundPlum Pictures is an award-winning independent production company based in London, UK, that makes factual entertainment and documentary television. Projects include George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, James May’s Man Lab, and documentaries such as Billionaire’s Paradise: Inside Necker Island. The company’s productions are broadcast on BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Sky, and are distributed in more than 140 countries.

problemJames May’s Man Lab aired on BBC Two and was hosted by James May of Top Gear fame. In the show, May initiates modern man in the lost ways of making, breaking, and fixing, with challenges such as mining coal to make soap, building a pool table, and felling a tree to make toilet paper. In one episode, May’s challenge would be to demonstrate pirate radio over a 5-hour broadcast while navigating a 12-mile stretch of the Grand Union Canal. The entire event would be filmed for the episode. With just a week’s notice, Plum Pictures gave Wired Broadcast a brief to install and staff a fully-equipped radio studio on a narrowboat, with a broadcast-quality stereo link from the boat to an FM transmitter atop a church in Milton Keynes.

solutionTo create a reliable stereo link between the moving boat and the transmitter site, Wired Broadcast installed a Viprinet® IP bonding router with six 3G connections on the boat and another router at the church with four 3G connections plus a link to the church’s guest Wi-Fi. To strengthen cellular signal quality under bridges and in canal cuttings, the team installed a 3G signal amplifier on the boat. The result was a reliable connection for the Tieline® codecs and 192-kbps stereo link between boat and transmitter. The team also installed a studio on the prow of the 72-foot boat, complete with on-air mixing desk, CD players and record deck, radio mics with in-ear monitoring, broadcaster’s phones, and Instant Replay.

benefitsAboard the sturdy Elizabeth of Glamis, May and team embarked on the maiden voyage of Man Lab Radio using an FM restricted service license. The show included interviews, live music and listener call-in, while May spun his favourite tracks on vinyl and CD with expert guidance from Wired Broadcast engineers on board. Even using highly-contended cellular connections, May had glitch-free connectivity for interviewing guests located on board, on nearby craft, and in local pubs and establishments along the way. In making this creative programme technically possible, Wired Broadcast helped Plum Pictures achieve yet another victory.

Agile provisioning: a local government brings remote construction sites online in minutes with 4G bonding

client backgroundThe Highland Council provides public services to the UK’s largest local government area, including development and construction of public infrastructure. Because of the rugged terrain and the remoteness of the region, roads, bridges, ports for ferries, and other infrastructure, are critical to connecting the area’s isolated communities.

problemAt project kickoff, construction teams need a full suite of corporate LAN-type services on site: email, file sharing, VoIP, printing and copying, etc. Due to the remoteness of most Council sites, reliable fixed lines were usually unavailable or subject to lengthy provisioning lead times. Satellite was an expensive and unreliable option. Lack of adequate connectivity was slowing construction teams and delaying projects, and the Council needed a cost-effective remedy.

solutionIn 2014, Wired Broadcast demonstrated Viprinet IP bonding technology at a Council construction site, bonding multiple 4G connections and delivering reliable connectivity in minutes. After the Council purchased the solution for multiple proof-of-concept projects, Wired Broadcast introduced the Council to partner xCommNet for ongoing sales, service, and support. xCommNet has since provided the Council with Wired Broadcast’s ultra-portable Mediaport® IP bonding routers as well as SIMs, and it pools cellular data to save costs for the Council.

Dave Barber, principal engineer in the Council’s Development and Infrastructure Service, estimates a productivity gain of between 15% and 25%, depending on the type of project. With its digital event management platform, the company is revolutionising the insurance claims process and transforming customer experience for both personal and business customers.

problem360Globalnet has developed a digital platform to address key challenges for both insurer and insured in the claims process. The company knew that, with larger and more complex property claims, a key part of the service would be agile connectivity at claims sites to enable first responders to gather information and share it with insurers in real time to determine any remedial actions to be taken on the insurers’ behalf. 360Globalnet searched for a technology that would deliver the bandwidth to stream live video from claims sites back to insurers. The solution would have to be portable and independent of local Wi-Fi, as first responders would not be permitted to use customer Wi-Fi for data security and privacy reasons.

solutionAfter a worldwide search of solutions, 360Globalnet decided to go with Wired Broadcast’s Mediaport®. 360Globalnet determined that, being ultra-portable and based on Viprinet®’s superior cellular IP bonding technology, Mediaport was the perfect solution. Indigo Technology Services

Reliable mobile POS for 50,000 concert-goers comes online in hours

client backgroundIndigo Technology Services in Warrington, UK, provides network engineering and project management services to a wide range of clients. A key part of Indigo’s business is the provision of IT services to customers that need guest Wi-Fi, CCTV, Voice-over-IP (VoIP), and third-party connectivity for ATMs and point-of-sale (POS), for live events. One of Indigo’s customers is global media giant Live Nation Entertainment/Ticketmaster, producer of festivals and events as well as concerts for names like U2 and Taylor Swift.

problemIn 2016, Indigo and client Jamie Wilson, senior network specialist at Live Nation, contacted Wired Broadcast about a large festival with a campus-style network. The site had multiple links as backup connectivity, but when the ISP failed to deliver the primary connection as scheduled, Indigo and Live Nation needed an alternative at short notice. Connectivity for POS for thousands of people was in the balance, not to mention event revenue.

solutionWired Broadcast was chosen to provide a solution for Live Nation events managed by Indigo. With the event date imminent, the Wired Broadcast team immediately swung into action. They quickly configured and set up a Viprinet® 2610 IP bonding router with six 4G connections linked to Wired Broadcast’s hub, supporting Indigo’s implementation both on site and remotely. When fixed lines were delivered eventually, Indigo replaced some 4G connections with fixed lines via microwave. Today, Wired Broadcast’s connectivity solutions are a standard part of Indigo’s event IT services for customers like Live Nation. “We now have options for our links, whether it be 4G/3G, DSL, broadband, FTTC, dedicated fibre, or satellite,” says Stephen Johansen, Indigo’s managing director. Reliance on DSL still represents a single point of failure, so even at locations with a fixed line, Indigo uses the Wired Broadcast solution as a backup.

benefitsFor Indigo, establishing reliable Internet at event locations is smooth sailing now, which enables it to focus on other parts of service delivery. The work Indigo has done with the help of Wired Broadcast has motivated one of its key customers to more than double the number of events it contracts to Indigo.
